This lecture is an introduction to forecasting for students, researchers and practitioners in management science and industrial engineering. It covers the principles and techniques of forecasting the future demand of an item for applications in the industrial, retail, and public sectors of the economy; the forecasts are projections that are based on the flow patterns of past demand. This lecture is an attempt to give the fundamental on how forecasts are used in controlling customer service. These are highly important tools for management in their daily course of activities and decision making. The lecture is designed for audience with modest amount of mathematical and statistical training. In addition, the lecture contains several numerical examples to give insight and smooth the way for the participants.
