Introduction
Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM), Universiti Putra Malaysia is the Malaysian partner in organizing programs to celebrate the Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 (MPE2013). This program is initiated by the North American Mathematical Institutes and currently engages many mathematical bodies, associations, societies, and institutions worldwide. INSPEM in her vision to champion mathematical research in its widest sense, naturally wishes to realise the engagement of mathematics in solving problems affecting the planet Earth and the quality of life of her inhabitants and thus the involvement in MPE2013.
Universities and Institutions in Malaysia through Malaysian Academy of Mathematical Scientists are involved in organizing activities related to the promotion of Mathematics and its applications for the benefits of mankind. Information on the activities are listed in this webpage.
Malaysian Launch
MPE 2013 Malaysia was officially launched by the Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM), the MPE 2013 Malaysian partner on the 15th December 2012. The occassion was attended by representatives of Malaysian universities and government educational agency and members of the Malaysian Academy of Mathematical Scientists. The launching ceremony for MPE2013 Malaysia was held on the 15th of December 2012 at Bangi Golf Resort Clubhouse near Putrajaya the administrative capital city of Malaysia. It was attended by approximately 60 people from various universities and government agencies. At this occasion, talks were given by two prominent speakers on the topics of the “Philosophy of Mathematics Education in Malaysia” and “Analysis of TIMSS Result for Malaysia”.
The programs of activities to celebrate MPE2013 Malaysia will be finalized by a committee set up by the Academy of Mathematical Scientists of Malaysia. They are related to the four themes of MPE2013 listed below. To start off, an International Conference on Mathematical Sciences and Statistics (ICMSS2013) will be held in Kuala Lumpur for 3 days beginning February 5, 2013.
Four themes of MPE2013:
The four themes of MPE2013 include geophysics, ecology and epidemiology, biodiversity, as well as the global organization of the planet by humans. The four themes of MPE2013 are:

A PLANET TO DISCOVER: oceans; meteorology and climate; mantle processes, natural
resources, solar systems
A PLANET SUPPORTING LIFE: ecology, biodiversity, evolution
A PLANET ORGANIZED BY HUMANS: political, economic, social and financial systems; organization of transport and communications networks; management of resources; energy
A PLANET AT RISK: climate change, sustainable development, epidemics; invasive species, natural disasters
