Network Information Service (NIS) :

NIS is used to centralize the authentication information for the four machines in the INSPEM cluster. In other words, user management eg. usernames, passwords and groups can be managed from all machines and is automatically synchronized across all machines. Please see Sun’s NIS documentation for more details. Note that INSPEM is using NIS and not NIS+. The information that is stored include

  • user and password information
  • group information
  • hosts and IP address information

In the INSPEM configuration, inspem1 is the master NIS server and inspem1a is the slave NIS server. The other hosts inspem2.upm.edu.my and inform.upm.edu.my are NIS clients. To add a new user, simply use the regular adduser script as root. However, you will need to update the NIS database. This is done by typing make in the /var/yp directory. You can do this once after adding multiple users. Sun’s NIS Naming Service documentation is at http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/816-4856?q=nis
